Statewide Tornado Drills Today March 21, 2012
Posted by admin in : Uncategorized , comments closedToday you’ll have the opportunity to make sure you and your family have a safety plan to ride out the storm during a statewide tornado drill.
There are actually two drills scheduled, one this morning between 10 and 10:30 and another in the evening between 7 and 7:30. That gives most everyone the chance to think about what they would do and where they would go during a tornado, both at work and at home.
Emergency officials say it’s important to take the drill seriously and really think about what to do if you hear a warning siren. Decide where you would go and, if you have children or pets, where you would take them. The idea is to seek shelter in the lowest part of a building in an interior room. If you’re in a vehicle, get out, because, as we saw recently in southern Indiana, cars and trucks were flipped and tossed around.
Pay attention to early warning systems with devices such as NOAA radios, local news and weather broadcasts, and load weather and radar applications on your smart phone. An emergency kit is also recommended. Pack enough bottled water, food, first aid supplies, medicine, flashlights, batteries, and supplies to sustain babies and pets for 72 hours.

HPD Officers Complete EVO Training December 10, 2011
Posted by admin in : Uncategorized , comments closedOn December 10th, 2011, the members of the HPD along with officers from The Cumberland Police Department embarked upon a co-operative EVO training session. EVO Training, or Emergency Vehicle Operation, requires yearly training mandated by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA).
Among the skills that officers were required to demonstrate proficiency included:
- Forward Serpentine
- Reverse Serpentine
- Shuffle Steering
- Lane Change
- Evasive
At the end of the day, all of the skills were combined into a miniature road course requiring officers to put everything together and demonstrate their understanding and proficiency. All in all it was a fun and exciting day of training.
